Grammy Awards 2013: Red Carpet Dresses

[caption id="attachment_404" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Kelly Clarkson at 2013 Grammy Awards [/caption] CBS brass may have tried to control the dress code at the 55th Grammy Awards with a stern memo warning celebrities not to bare it all.  But in the end, stars still flashed plenty of skin in sexy dresses with cut out panels and sheer net. Jennifer Lopez  teased that the ultra high leg-revealing slit in on her one-sleeve Anthony Vaccerello came close but didn't quite break the dress code. Overall, a little bit of everything turned up on the red carpet last night from drop-dead gorgeous gowns in classic silver screen style to uninspiring almost boring dresses to frocks that looked more like Hollywood costumes. Singer Kimbra accepted her award for "Record of the Year" in a fairy-tale beaded silk tulle dress that Tinkerbell might have worn - if she dressed up. Florence Welsh stood out in a custom-designed Givenchy gown with over-sized sequin studs that may have looked better if they were smaller - and fewer.   For a complete head- to- toe  color scheme, Welsh wore a matching emerald evening purse and high heels -  also designed by Givenchy.   The color  choice perfectly played up Welsh's raven locks and green eyes and, at the same time, hit a hot hue trend. Emerald is Pantone's color of the year! Taylor Swift looked elegant in a creamy, dreamy gown by J. Mandel with knife -pleated skirt and cut-out bodice framed in silver metal pieces. Adele, normally a fashion hit in black, disappointed viewers wearing a red short dress with enough blooms on it to make her look like a flower pot.   Nicole Kidman's gold embroidered gown by Vera Wang was gorgeous . But the color failed to do anything for the pale-skinned beauty. Cut outs on celebrities like Alicia Keys and Chrissy Teigen gave stars a chance to playfully bare boobs,  midriffs and thighs without the risk of being sent home. Kelly Rowland, wearing a black George Chakra Couture gown, reassured the audience that the peek-a-boo panels strategically placed on her curvy body meet the dress code. Kelly Clarkson came off as a sheer genius when she accepted her award for "Best Pop Vocal Album"   in a simple black dress with see-through sleeves.  The net illusion theme continued when Rihana arrived in a high-impact fire- engine red frock by Azzedine Alaia with a sweeping train that commanded attention.
Italian design Roberto Cavalli demonstrated his timeless, elegant style last night when he dressed Carrie Underwood, Carly Rae Jepsen and Miranda Lambert in va-va-voom black evening gowns.
Black proved to be a big favorite at the Grammys.  Mother-to-be Amber Rose, less a month from delivering a son with rapper Wiz Khalif , glowed in a black long formal by Donna Koran that highlighted, rather than hid, her belly. Short dresses created a fashion story for stars like Kay Dennings  and Faith Hill who hiked up the hem without giving up glamour. Did you see any formal gowns that you would even consider wearing to a black-tie event on your social calendar? Ready for the next big red carpet event of the season?  You won't want to miss the Academy Awards when the Oscars are handed out on February 24, 2013.
