Plus Size Formal Dresses for Melissa McCarthy
The Oscar-nominated star of the hit movie "Bridesmaids" summed it up best by telling the Hollywood Reporter that "trying to find stuff that's still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible. It's either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle." I agree. That's why I always design plus size special occasion dresses around the fashion mantra "no more muumuus". Nothing is less flattering than putting a women with curves in a shapeless tent of a dress.
McCarthy's comments in Redbook lit up social media as soon as the magazine came out. And they got the Fashion Team here at Sydney's Closet buzzing too.
"We love Melissa McCarthy," says Rachel Duncan, who manages our social media and works with our retail partners. "When we heard that she had been shunned by top fashion designers like Dior we felt her pain. Every day here at Sydney's Closet we hear from women across the U.S. who feel the fashion world has passed them by. Some are actually in tears that they will never find the plus size formal dresses of their dreams to wear to Prom, weddings, formal events or cocktail parties."
Oh, and on the off chance McCarthy or her stylist reads this, Rachel wants to remind you that the offer is always on the table for you to wear a glamorous Sydney's Closet design on the red carpet. "We Size Up Glamour so all curvy women feel gorgeous when they dress up," she says. "It doesn't matter to Sydney's Closet if you're a plus size actress at the Oscars or a full-figured teen being crowned Prom Queen."
She'll be in good company. Actresses Phyllis Smith and Gabourey Sidibie have worn Sydney's Closet gowns on the red carpet.
Reading about the fashion fuss, I was surprised to learn that McCarthy's talents include sewing and she studied clothing and textiles in college. She even considered studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
What do you think about celebrities creating their own dress collections? How do you feel about the backlash against top designers who rejected McCarthy. Let me know!
