Expert Tips

  • Never ever guess your size, measurements are your best friend.
  • Measure carefully before purchasing.
  • The right fit is what will make you feel amazing, the size is just a number.
  • Consider the fabric type, stretchy fabrics may give a little more room, while stiffer fabrics fit closer to the body. Check out our Fabric Guide for details on how different fabrics fit and feel.
  • Check the dress style. Some styles fit certain body types better than others. Learn more about which styles flatter your shape on our Body Type Styling Guide.
  • Read the product description for notes on fit or unique features like corset backs or adjustable straps.

Common Sizing Questions

What if my measurements are between sizes?

If your measurements fall between sizes, we recommend sizing up. Dresses can usually be taken in, but they can’t always be let out.

Can I measure myself?

Measuring yourself can be tricky, it’s hard to get an accurate reading on your own. It’s best to have a professional tailor or seamstress help, or enlist a friend or family member. You’ll be glad you did!

Will my formalwear size be different from my everyday size?

Formalwear often fits differently than everyday clothing. At Sydney’s Closet, we aim to keep our sizing as close to standard jean sizing as possible, but fit can vary by style and fabric.

Is my bra size the same as my bust measurement?

No. Your bra size is not the same as your bust measurement. To find your bust size, measure around your back and across the fullest part of your bust. If you’re unsure, we recommend watching our How to Measure video for step-by-step guidance.

What should I use to measure?

Use a soft, flexible cloth measuring tape, metal ones belong on construction sites, not your body!

Don't have a measuring tape? No problem! You can use a piece of string, ribbon, or even a charging cord. Wrap it around your body where you need to measure, mark the length, then lay it flat and measure it with a ruler, yardstick, or metal tape measure. Yes, the metal one gets a pass this time.

Even if I follow the size chart, will I still need alterations?

Probably. Most formalwear needs a little tweaking, as everyone’s body is unique, so a few alterations are normal. A little tailoring goes a long way toward the perfect fit!
