The Mermaid gown earns its name from the characteristic train that is essential to the fitted design. Trains on a Mermaid bridal gown can be long or short. A simple sweep train that may extend only eight inches hints of a longer skirt in the back. On the other hand, a court train that extends several feet behind the skirt adds drama going down the aisle and coming back up.

If you opt for a long train, consider pinning it up after the ceremony and photos. That way during the reception you can avoid tripping or being stepped on accidentally by well-meaning guests.

Q&A: Plus-Size Fitted & Mermaid Wedding Gowns

What body shape do Mermaid plus size wedding dresses best fit and flatter?

An hourglass shaped full figure is ideal for brides who want to wear curve-hugging Mermaid wedding dresses. The fitted silhouette shows off the well-proportioned curves of their bust, waist and hips. Brides with a pear-shaped body can also pull off a Mermaid-style wedding dress. If you’re a curvy bride with an Apple or column shaped figure, you’ll find a more flattering silhouette in a plus size A-line wedding dress.

If you have your heart set on a Mermaid wedding dress plus size, be sure to look for a style with a lace-up back instead of a zipper. That design feature enhances the flattering fit of this fit-and-flare style. Plus, it keeps down the cost of expensive alterations.

For a very dramatic look, opt for a Mermaid style gown with crinoline that poofs out the skirt to create an eye-catching A-line shape that accentuates your curves.

Do plus size Mermaid wedding gowns come with sleeves?

A Mermaid plus size wedding dress with sleeves in a variety of designs and lengths is always an option, says Phyllis Brasch Librach, who designs exclusively for curvy brides sizes 14 to 40.

Cap sleeves and short sleeves work perfectly for brides tying the knot in warm or hot months. Three-quarter and long sleeve suit weddings in cool or cold months.

You will find sleeves on Mermaid gowns designed with V-neck and Scoop necklines that create an armhole on the pattern to attach the sleeve. For sleeveless options, brides can look for a Mermaid gown with a strapless or halter neckline.

What fabrics are best for Mermaid plus size wedding dresses?

Mermaid plus size bridal gowns come in a wide variety of elegant fabrics that look stunning for brides planning formal, informal, intimate or destination weddings.

Satin, a timeless bridal fabric, creates a curvy plus Mermaid gown with a classic look perfect for a fancy black-tie wedding. The luxurious, smooth fabric lends itself very well to being draped and pleated in a style that contours the bride’s curvy figure. Plus the fabric works for a wedding anytime time of year: Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall.

A Mermaid plus gown in tulle, a delicate open net fabric, is usually reserved for bridal ball gowns. But when designed in a tight, body hugging style it adds a subtle fairy-tale element to a sexy, sensual wedding day look. Because it’s so lightweight, tulle makes an ideal choice for a fitted gown in Spring or Summer or for a tropical or beach wedding. Go for a glitter tulle to add just the right amount of sparkle on your wedding day.

The feminine and oh-so romantic appeal of lace makes it a very popular choice for Mermaid bridal dresses. Curvy brides can delight in an almost endless selection of floral patterns, textures and even colors for their lace mermaid gown. For a stunning look, opt for ivory lace and then line the gown in champagne, taupe, cream or nude to create contrast and showcase the lace pattern.

What is the difference between a plus size Mermaid and Trumpet gowns?

The main difference between a plus size Mermaid and Trumpet wedding dresses comes down to a subtle change on the placement of the skirt style line. Formal skirts on curvy plus Mermaid bridal gowns begin to flare dramatically at the knee or just slightly below the knee. On Trumpet plus size wedding dresses, formal skirts start to widen higher on the body. The skirt gradually and softly flares out starting around your thighs or about 12 inches below your natural waistline.

Mermaid-style bridal gowns also differ from Trumpet designs because they feature an alluring train on the back of the skirt that extends from side seam to side seam. This fabric extension creates a “tail” that earns the style its Mermaid name.

Both Trumpet and Mermaids give you a sexy, slim look on your wedding day. The classic Mermaid silhouette hugs your curves tighter through the upper and lower hips and thighs. The dramatic style makes a bold statement that you’re a bride confident with your fabulous curves.

The more modern Trumpet silhouette begins to flare around your thighs. That means you get a looser and easier fit through your hips.

You can’t go wrong with either style. Both make fabulous fashion statements for any curvy bride.
