Expert Tips

  • Keep the measuring tape level around your body to ensure the measurement is correct.
  • Use a flexible cloth measuring tape to measure your bust, waist, and hips. Avoid a metal tape measure, it won’t give accurate results.
  • Ask a friend, relative, or professional tailor to help you measure. Having someone assist makes it much easier and more precise.
  • Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your body, but be careful not to make it too tight.
  • Write down or record your measurements so you have them handy for reference.

Hips

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and lower body.

Tip: If you are 5’3” or shorter, measure about 6 inches below your waist. If you are 5’4” or taller, measure about 7 inches below your waist.

Hallow-to-Hem

Hollow-to-hem (HTH) measures from the hollow at the base of your neck to the hem. This tells you how long the dress will be on you. Ask a friend to help for best accuracy.

Tip: It's always best to let someone else get this measurement.

Common Measurement Questions

Can I measure myself?

Measuring yourself can be tricky, it’s hard to get an accurate reading on your own. It’s best to have a professional tailor or seamstress help, or enlist a friend or family member. You’ll be glad you did!

Can I take my measurements in regular underwear?

Yes! You can measure in regular underwear, but for the most accurate fit, it’s best to wear the underwear or light shapewear you plan to wear with your dress. Heavy or very structured shapewear can distort your measurements.

What should I use to measure?

Use a soft, flexible cloth measuring tape, metal ones belong on construction sites, not your body!

Don't have a measuring tape? No problem! You can use a piece of string, ribbon, or even a charging cord. Wrap it around your body where you need to measure, mark the length, then lay it flat and measure it with a ruler, yardstick, or metal tape measure. Yes, the metal one gets a pass this time.

Is my bra size the same as my bust measurement?

No. Your bra size is not the same as your bust measurement. To find your bust size, measure around your back and across the fullest part of your bust. If you’re unsure, we recommend watching our How to Measure video for step-by-step guidance.

What if my measurements are between sizes?

If your measurements fall between sizes, we recommend sizing up. Dresses can usually be taken in, but they can’t always be let out.

Even if I follow the size chart, will I still need alterations?

Probably. Most formalwear needs a little tweaking, as everyone’s body is unique, so a few alterations are normal. A little tailoring goes a long way toward the perfect fit!
