The Oscars’ red carpet is Super Bowl-meets-Fashion Week: it’s the pinnacle of awards ceremonies and the biggest celebrity fashion evening of the year. So how did this year’s Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood stack up? Were there any big fashion hits when it came to red carpet fashion? Did Jennifer Lopez shock us by covering up her chest? (Answer – no, but she stunned us in a gown that checks off most of the night’s big trends). Read on to find out the best looks from the evening that will inspire plus size dress fashion. Color Run: White and Red White and red aren’t necessarily “new” colors in the red carpet world. We’ve seen them at this year’s SAG Awards and Golden Globes, but at the Oscar’s they felt different. Maybe it was the #AskHerMore campaign created in response to sexism seen in red carpet interviews, or the pushback after no African American actors were nominated for the Oscars’ four acting categories. But when we saw this year’s formal dress choices we felt like there was a renewed focus on sophistication and craft. This made for some truly beautiful dresses in white and red tones. Stars opted for beautiful shades of ivory, cream, and pearl in a range of elegant fabrics. Actress Zendaya Coleman wore an off-the-shoulder dress in white satin, and Faith Hill channeled Old Hollywood in a long-sleeved dress with a wrapped bodice and plunging V-neck that fit her perfectly. Ladies in red included Oscar Nominee Rosamund Pike, who wore a second-skin red lace gown with scalloped edge detail. The satin panels and belted waist looked gorgeous, and could work for slim or curvy shapes. Singer Solange Knowles also went for red, wearing layers of the shade in a loose, flowing dress. And plenty more stars like Dakota Johnsonand Behati Prinsloo chose this sexy shade; more to come on their stellar looks! Nearly Nude Celebrities went nearly nude at the Oscars; no, not sans clothing, but in romantic shades of pale pastels and soft neutrals. These colors look great for Spring special occasion dresses and weddings. It makes us even more excited to debut our Golden Girl (SC7162) plus size evening dress in warm gold. Oprah Winfrey wore a peachy beige Vera Wang gown, one of our favorite plus size celebrity looks of the night. The V-neckline and wrapping effect of layers of chiffon really showed off her figure. Other stars also opted for pale tones, too, including Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston, who also pulled off the wrapped effect with a strapless beaded Versace gown in beige. Pastel dresses were no less popular, with “How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis wowing the crowd in a pink champagne gown paired with matching accessories and a deep berry lip. “Selma” Director Ava DuVernay not only helped stave off protests at the Oscars, she also pulled of a show-stopping dress. Ava went for a one-of-a-kind Prada gown in one of the designer’s trademark quirky colors: soft periwinkle. She opted for jewel embellishment along the sleeves and chest instead of a V-neck, and the effect was beautiful. Octavia Spencer showed off one of our favorite pastel shades – mint - in a Tadashi Shoji gown with curve-hugging pleats and a sparkling train. Piled on Pearls Speaking of sparkle, there were plenty of sequins at the Oscars, but a surprise favorite was pearls. The bodice of Felicity Jones’ Alexander McQueen dress was encrusted in pale grey pearls. The full skirt may have swallowed up her small frame, but the fun neckline and gorgeous satin fabric more than made up for it. Lupita Nyong’o, our 2015 red carpet queen, also went for pearls – everywhere! There were reportedly over 6,000 pearls on her halter neck Calvin Klein dress. Turn up the Texture Texture should have taken home its own Oscar award this year; it was the trend of the night. Fabrics were rich and showcased in dresses with artistic pleats and folds. Marion Cotillard’s Dior gown used circular embellishment and looked even more stunning from the back with a cinched black band. We think she rocked even better than the runway version! What do you think? Naomi Watts took on the textured look in an Armani Prive design covered in black caviar beads and silvery strips of reflective material. Behati Prinsloo went to the house of Armani, too, choosing a strapless gown in head-to-toe black and red beading sewed on layers of netting. She may have had a slip-up at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party (wearing the right undergarment is important, ladies!), but she looked so stunning it didn’t really matter. We could go on and on about all the stunning red-carpet fashion at the 2015 Oscars. Let us know who your favorites were, and keep the red carpet convo going! Image credit: Ghetty Images
